The recent cancellation of Russian ballerina Svetlana Zakharova’s performance at the Les Étoiles gala, scheduled at the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone in Rome, has reignited debate over the relationship between culture, politics, and international relations.
Following the incident, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Italy, Alexey Paramonov, expressed a critical stance toward the decision, suggesting that Italy is aligning its choices with broader political dynamics, even at the expense of sectors traditionally considered neutral, such as culture.
His remarks come within an already tense geopolitical context, where the overlap between cultural expression and political conflict is becoming increasingly evident. Culture, historically regarded as a channel for dialogue and exchange between peoples, is now at risk of being drawn into dynamics of division and exclusion.
From a human rights and international cooperation perspective, such developments raise significant concerns. The restriction or cancellation of cultural events linked to specific national identities risks deepening divisions and limiting opportunities for mutual understanding.
At the same time, the European landscape reflects growing polarization, where political and diplomatic decisions are influencing broader areas of public life, including arts and cultural expression. This trend calls for careful reflection on the role culture should continue to play, especially during periods of international tension.
For organizations committed to human rights and dialogue, the guiding principle remains clear: culture should not be instrumentalized as a tool of confrontation, but preserved as a space for connection, capable of maintaining open channels of communication even in complex circumstances.
The Zakharova case is therefore not merely an isolated incident, but an indicator of a broader shift, placing Europe and the international community before a critical challenge – balancing security concerns, political coherence, and the protection of universal values such as cultural freedom and intercultural dialogue.
