ITALY
There are stories that make no noise, yet say far more than many words ever could. Stories built on daily effort, difficult choices, and solutions found step by step. This is one of them.
Tiziana was already living alone in the countryside with her cats. A simple life, far from chaos, suddenly disrupted by an eviction that forced her to rethink everything. Faced with that situation, she did not choose the easiest path. She decided to invest in herself, purchasing a small house on the edge of the woods, entirely in need of renovation.
A complex project, especially for someone facing it alone. Before starting the works, she asked for a technical review to ensure everything would proceed correctly. The construction company proved reliable: a small family-run business that respected timelines and agreements, allowing her to move in by the following spring.
But the real challenges came afterward.
While the electricity connection was completed without major issues, water quickly became a critical problem. Connecting to the public water network requires crossing other properties, and the bureaucratic process remains unresolved to this day. In the meantime, Tiziana manually fills a storage tank using containers, sourcing water wherever possible. A temporary solution, but a necessary one.
At the same time, access to the house posed another major obstacle. The final stretch of road, about three to four hundred meters through the woods, had been abandoned and reduced to little more than a path. After obtaining the required permits, earthmoving work was carried out to reopen and stabilize it. However, a particularly rainy winter turned that stretch into mud and deep ruts. On several occasions, Tiziana had to leave her car behind and continue on foot. Sometimes, she could not reach the house at all and had to stay overnight elsewhere.
Once the weather improved, a solution was implemented. With the help of a local friend and the use of excavation equipment, a drainage system was created along the upper side of the road to collect and redirect rainwater flowing down from the hillside. The work was demanding, complicated by rocks and exposed roots, but ultimately effective. The road began to dry and became passable again.
Water management also required adaptation. A system was set up to collect rainwater from the roof into the storage tank, reducing the need for manual transport. Additionally, a second tank with a pump was provided through support from members of the wider network, increasing storage capacity and resilience.
The house is still under construction. Several solutions remain temporary. Yet, step by step, through work, cooperation, and practical ingenuity, Tiziana is transforming that corner of the woods into a livable space.
This is not just the story of a house. It is the story of determination, of autonomy, and of a form of community that takes shape through concrete actions. A place on the edge of the woods that, slowly, is becoming a home.
