End-of-Year and New Year Message

End-of-Year and New Year Message

from the Secretary-General

Confederation of Humanitarian Nations (CNU)

The closing of one year and the beginning of another offer the Confederation of Humanitarian Nations an opportunity for careful and responsible reflection on the global state of human rights and on the work carried out by those who, often in silence and isolation, continue to defend them.

The year now drawing to a close has once again been marked by armed conflicts, political repression, ethnic and religious persecution, restrictions on fundamental freedoms, the criminalization of dissent, and the growing exposure to risk faced by Human Rights Defenders (HRDs).

According to available international sources, hundreds of human rights defenders lost their lives during the year as a direct consequence of their civic, social, and humanitarian engagement.
The actual figure is likely higher, as in many contexts violations go undocumented, deaths are not officially acknowledged, and accountability is systematically denied.

Alongside these losses, there is another reality that deserves equal recognition: tens of thousands of women and men continue their work every day, often without protection, recognition, or visibility, to uphold universal principles such as freedom, human dignity, equality, justice, and respect for the human person.

Within this complex global landscape, CNU reaffirms its commitment as a humanitarian coordination, protection, and representative structure, working to:

  • provide institutional and operational support to Human Rights Defenders;

  • strengthen responsible international cooperation networks;

  • promote a culture of human rights that is concrete, verifiable, and not merely rhetorical;

  • ensure visibility, protection, and continuity for those operating on the ground.

Throughout the year, CNU Missions, confederated representatives, volunteers, and collaborators have contributed, across different territories, to monitoring activities, training initiatives, assistance programs, institutional dialogue, and community-based support.
These results are often quiet and not immediately measurable, yet they are essential for building durable and credible foundations.

To all those who have worked under the aegis of the Confederation, and to all Human Rights Defenders worldwide, we extend our sincere recognition.
To those who have lost their lives in defense of these ideals, we owe remembrance and a renewed commitment to ensuring that their sacrifice is not rendered meaningless.

The new year begins with even greater responsibility.
CNU will continue to act with prudence, determination, and coherence, fully aware that the protection of human rights is never permanently secured, but requires constant presence, competence, and integrity.

With the hope that the coming year will witness fewer victims and greater protection, fewer silences and increased awareness, I extend, on behalf of the Confederation of Humanitarian Nations, my wishes for a year’s end and a new beginning grounded in respect, dignity, and shared responsibility.
